I wrote a really useful, helpful report describing how to get a site listed in Google within 48 hours, for free.

I knew people would love to see this report, so instead of trying to sell it, I decided to give it away.

People who wanted to see the report could just visit my website, and in exchange for their name and email address, I'd show them the new report.

So my "price" was just their email address. The people I emailed the offer to were already on my customer list or affiliate list, so they had no problem giving me their details... I just wanted them to take a small action and realize they were about to get something useful.

People don't value complete freebies, so I asked them to do something painless in exchange for my report. The promise of a free report got more people to visit my site than a direct sales offer pitched in an email would!

So how did I make money giving away a free report?

Well, at the top and bottom of the free report, I linked to a product by a friend of mine using my affiliate link. His promotional headline was "how to get into the new Yahoo directory for free".

Do you see how well that ties in with the topic of my report, "how to get into Google in 48 hours for free"? The two are very closely related.

The Results

The link to my friend's product got a massive number of clicks!

I had 930 people sign up for the new list (to access the free report) and my friend has tracked 639 visitors to his site. That's a massive 68.7% of people viewing the free report went on to my friend's website. Over two-thirds!

What's more impressive is that 21 people bought his product... that's almost a 3.3% conversion rate in an industry which struggles to get 1%.

Because of the deal I had with my friend, I pocketed $450.49 from those sales... and all because I'd taken the time to write a useful report give it away. Only after people read my report did I direct them to my friend's site.

The Final Word

The secret, my friend, is content.

Here are the simple steps...

• Create some quality content such as original articles, reports or ebooks

• Give them away for free or in return for an email address

• Use an affiliate link to an offer which is closely targetted to what your audience is interested in

• ...you'll make money!

Someone else who fully agrees with my thoughts here is Ken Evoy. His model for making money online is to "C-T-P-M" which stands for "Content - Traffic - Pre-Sell - Monetize".

In plain English, he says to create good content then use that content to gain traffic (search engine's love fresh content).

The next step is to warm people up with a fresh looking site and friendly language so that people are pre-disposed to buy what you're offering.

Finally, you can monetize the traffic... and it's so much easier once you've established a basic relationship and some initial trust between you and the site visitor!

You can easily make money online... as long as you establish trust and a relationship with your visitors first.
